Answer to Question 2

2. y = -x2 + 2x + 4
x + y = 4

Solve the linear equation for y. y = -x + 4
Substitute in the quadratic equation

Multiply by -1 to get rid of the
negative sign in front of the x2 term

-x + 4=-x2 + 2x + 4
-x = -x2 + 2x
0 = -x2 + 3x
0 = x2 - 3x
0 = x(x - 3)
x = 0       x - 3 = 0
              x = 3

Substitute each value back into the linear equation. x + y = 4

0 + y = 4
y = 4            (0,4)

x + y = 4

3 + y = 4
y = 1            (3,1)

Solution Set is: {(0,4),(3,1)}
