Card Shuffle for
Algebraic Translations

Topic Index | Algebra Index | Regents Exam Prep Center

Create a series of 3x5 cards that contain statements that can be translated into mathematical equations.  Divide the class into small groups or pairs.  Give each group one or more of the cards and ask them to translate their statement into a mathematical equation.  Students are to place the "number" of the card and their translation(s) on a sheet of paper to hand in.

Number the board from 1-12 in preparation for the students' responses.  Ask a representative from each group to write their translation(s) on the board.

Now, ask the groups to switch cards.  In this second round, the groups are responsible for checking to see if they agree with the answers that are on the board.  The students must work with whatever has been placed on the board without criticizing the authors.  Students are to place the "numbers" of these new cards on their same papers, with a statement of "CORRECT" or "NOT CORRECT".  If they disagree with the answer, they must put a correct response.

Note to teacher:
This activity is best suited to being a graded assignment or extra credit.  Be sure, if you plan to grade the papers, that you jot down the 12 answers that are on the board.

The cards could also be used to randomly "deal" questions for a quick quiz or for a class discussion.
