Emergency Broadcasting Stations

Supply each student, or pair of students, with a map, a ruler and a compass.

Choose 2 major cities on the map.

An emergency broadcasting system wishes to place a series of broadcasting stations in such a manner that the stations are exactly the same distance from each of the two major cities and are at a minimum of 2 miles apart and a maximum of 3 miles apart..

Using the map scale, a knowledge of locus, and construction skills, students are to draw (construct) on the map the possible locations of the broadcasting stations.  A short paragraph describing the location should be prepared.  The paragraph should indicate any physical obstacles such as rivers, lakes, highways, etc. which will need to be avoided.

If working in pairs, have each pair work with a different set of cities.  If time allows, students could present their findings to the class using an overhead transparency of the map and colored markers.
