Adding and subtracting rational fractions requires a thorough understanding of algebraic manipulation, including working with powers and factoring. Consequently, the more exposure students have to algebraic manipulation, the more confident they will be in tackling these challenging problems. Here is an engaging activity which can be adapted to a variety of problem solving situations: The Crumple, Solve and Toss Activity: 1. Divide the class into groups of two or three students. 2. Place 4 containers in the front of the room.
3. The first container is labeled EASY and contains problems that all students should be able to solve without difficulty. 4. The second container is labeled OK and contains problems that are a bit more challenging, but do-able by most students. 5. The third container is labeled HARD and contains problems that most students will find quite challenging. 6. The fourth container is used to receive the TOSSed items. 7. Before the activity begins, prepare sheets of paper with addition and/or subtraction problems of rational fractions. One problem per page. Crumple up the paper and place it in the container that matches the difficulty level of the problem. Record the answers to the problems on one "teacher" sheet and set aside. 8. Each group must solve one problem from each of the containers. A member of the group picks a crumpled paper from the container for the group to solve. If the problem is solved correctly, the group may "toss" the paper into the last container. If the problem is not solved correctly, the group may receive a hint or may choose another problem from the same container. Hints:
