This
activity is a fast and simple way to illustrate translations for students.
If your classroom has a traditional seating arrangement (rows and columns
of seats), the students themselves can become the objects to be
translated.

Develop
ahead of time a pattern that will allow each student to
"translate" himself/herself to a new seat in the classroom.

Place
the translation directions on 3x5 cards.

Ask
the students to sit in their seats facing forward. They should
study their present body position (hand position, placement of feet,
etc.).

Hand
out the translation cards.

Ask
students to move to their new positions under the given translation.
Many
different translation patterns are possible. Here is an example of one
translation for a classroom of 30 students:

This activity works equally
well with reflections. Draw a line down the center of the classroom
and ask the students to "reflect" themselves across the line.
Suggestion:
If you want to actually "draw" a line of reflection on the
classroom floor, avoid using
masking tape. It can become difficult to remove from the floor once
students have walked on it. Colored electrical tape works nicely.
