Being able to perform scientific notation computations by hand is a wonderful review of the properties of powers (exponents) and a good preparation for working in various scientific fields.   Once the concept of scientific notation is understood, the use of a calculator can be used as a means of checking work and as a motivational tool.

 The use of scientific notation with the aid of a calculator is also taught in the sciences when the need arises.
