Activity to verify that inequality shading is correct.
Download this activity for your classroom use.

Divide the class into groups.  Ask each student in each group to prepare a graph according to the following directions.  Provide each group (or each student if you prefer) with a different linear inequality.  If possible, provide students with colored pencils.  Ask that the graph be prepared without the use of a graphing calculator.

Sample inequalities:

Task for activity:

Ask students to select 10 integer coordinates such that four points are on one side of the line, four points are on the other side of the line, and 2 points are ON the line.

List the 10 coordinates.  Next to each coordinate write the word TRUE or FALSE as to whether the point makes the inequality true.

Based upon their findings, ask students to shade their graphs and make any necessary adjustments to the line.

When the graphs are complete, ask students who were dealing with > or < to tell the results of testing coordinates that were ON the line.  Do the same for students dealing with strictly > or <.

Collect papers when the activity is finished to insure that all students participate in an active manner.
